Kakuma – June 23, 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)
A dispute between the market committee and suppliers association that threatened to stall operations at Kakuma Modern Market has been resolved.
The resolution was mediated by a grievance handling team that included representatives of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), Maendeleo ya Wanawake and the office of the Turkana West Member of Parliament, under the leadership of Kakuma Municipality Manager Engineer Benjamin Tukei.
Speaking after the meeting, Eng. Tukei said the two groups had agreed to jointly develop standards of operation that would be uniformly applied to all suppliers. Tension began building over frequent changes to guidelines and procedures set by the market committee for suppliers, it emerged.
While appreciating the parties for using the grievance handling facility, Eng. Tukei said the municipality was keen on ensuring Kakuma Modern Market serves its purpose for the county, traders and consumers alike.
“I am glad that the conflict has been amicably resolved. The involvement of all these sector players and the general public is aimed at turning this market into a trading hub that generates revenue, encourages traders to comply with existing laws and serves the needs of the local population,” he said.
Eng.Tukei also said plans were underway to boost the capacity of the municipality to execute its mandate through major infrastructure projects, including tarmacking of key roads, establishment of a fire station and installation of high-mast security lights in the area.
