The Chief Officer for Livestock Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Peter Ikaru led the Veterinary Directorate and Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) staff to check progress at the ongoing Eliye livestock vaccination exercise .
The FCDC-supported drive, targets 100,000 livestock for vaccination, deworming and supportive treatment in Turkana East, Central, Aroo and Loima Sub-Counties.
The seven-day exercise ensures the teams are efficient in preventing the transmission and spread of contagious animal diseases from animals to people, as well as from one animal to the other during the migratory movements and interactions at grazing and watering points across the targeted areas.
“We have vaccinated over 16,000 livestock in two days across the four sub counties and are therefore on track towards achieving our target, once it is completed,” said Chief Officer Ikaru.
He lauded the strategic partnership and collaboration with FCDC, reaffirming the County’s commitment to protect pastoralists’ livelihoods throughout the year.This follows the CCO’s launch of the exercise in Lodwar few days ago.
The Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Benson Long’or echoed CCO Ikaru’s sentiment on FCDC’s partnership, adding that the Veterinary Directorate provided the required veterinary supplies, technical staff and equipment for the intervention while FCDC supported with the logistics.
A beneficiary Emuria Ekunyuk Lore,thanks the county government for the vaccination drive, urges government to make it a routine exercise.
Lore requests for acaricides for ticks and other essential drugs for diseases like Mange and Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia(CCPP).
Local administrators and Community Disease Reporters engaged livestock keepers to create awareness towards presenting their animals for vaccination.
CCO’s team included Dr. Erenius Nakadio (Deputy Director, Veterinary Services), Lincolyn Lomorukai (Cold Chain Manager), and FCDC’s Dr. Limlim Elim, and Ayan Ismail.
