The County Government has formally handed over project site for the rehabilitation of the Lokwii–Lotubae–Namorutung’a water sites to the contractor, paving way for commencement of works. This is aimed at improving access to clean and safe drinking water in Turkana East.
The handover marked the start of project implementation and an opportunity to understand the scope, timelines, and role of each stakeholder in supporting delivery of the project.
Speaking during a public baraza, the County Executive for Water Services WillyJustus Akwalata stated the project is a key intervention in strengthening water service delivery and enhancing livelihoods in Turkana East.
He called for cooperation between the contractor and the local community to ensure the timely completion and long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.
Akwalata outlined the project components, noting that the rehabilitation works will significantly expand access to water across Lokwii, Lotubae, and Namorutunga. The project includes the construction of 18 water kiosks, alongside 20 additional kiosks to serve schools, health facilities and surrounding communities.
He added that the water distribution network will cover approximately 35 kilometres, improving coverage and reliability of supply.
The project will also install six water storage tanks with a total capacity of 500m³ to enhance water storage and distribution efficiency.
Samwuel Ekaran, the Managing Director, Turkana Rural Water and Sanitation Company, affirmed the utility’s role in providing technical oversight and ensuring the rehabilitated schemes are effectively managed once completed.
