The County Government, through the Department of Health and Sanitation Services, in collaboration with Amref Health Africa, successfully completed a six-day support supervision and mentorship activity across health facilities in Turkana South and Aroo sub-counties. This exercise was geared towards strengthening healthcare services and improving the quality of patient care.

This was through follow-up on action points identified during previous supervision visits. The team assessed the progress made by health facilities, identified achievements, and provided practical guidance to address remaining gaps. This collaborative approach encouraged continuous quality improvement and accountability among healthcare workers.

According to Dr. David Moru, Director Health Products and Technologies.health workers showed improved understanding of and adherence to Taifa Care (SHA) guidelines, resulting in more efficient, coordinated, and patient-centered care. The supervision also identified strengths, provided constructive feedback, and reinforced best practices, contributing to enhanced quality of healthcare services.

“As a result, the community has benefited from improved access to essential health services, increased confidence in the healthcare system, and greater awareness of available health programs,” he said.

During the supervision, the team evaluated the availability of essential medical commodities to ensure that health facilities remained adequately stocked. They also assessed service delivery processes to confirm that patients continued to receive timely, effective, and quality healthcare services. Positive progress was noted in several facilities, reflecting the commitment of health workers.

The supervision team further recommended that ensuring the medical equipment remains operational is essential for improving diagnosis, treatment, and overall patient outcomes.

Staff welfare was also given significant attention during the visit. The team engaged healthcare workers in discussions about workplace challenges, motivation, and support mechanisms aimed at improving performance and job satisfaction. This engagement reinforced the importance of creating a conducive working environment for quality healthcare delivery. These mentorship activities strengthened staff confidence and enhanced the quality of healthcare services.

The supervision team also evaluated the functionality of the cold chain system, including the vaccine refrigerator and temperature monitoring records. The facility demonstrated good practices in maintaining appropriate vaccine storage conditions, ensuring vaccine potency and supporting effective immunization services. Continuous monitoring was emphasized to maintain high standards of vaccine management.

Maternal and newborn healthcare services received special attention during the supervision.
