Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus met with Dr. Bora Bosha, Chief Advisor and Executive Assistant to the Head of the South Ethiopia Regional State, and held talks on peace building efforts along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
The two also received briefs on the ongoing interventions by Supporting Peace and Resilience through Appropriate Development (SPREAD) program, jointly implemented by the respective Kenya and Ethiopian sub national governments and the Danish Church Aid (DCA), a major peace actor in the corridor.
In his address, DG Erus expressed the county’s commitment towards peace building saying that Turkana would work closely with the neighbouring sub-national governments to ensure that Todonyang-Omorate-Kibish corridors continue to enjoy dividends of peace.
The DG revealed that Turkana was already taking advantage of the peace dividends realized by the efforts to invest in vocational training, fish value chains, pastoral economy and infrastructure development sectors to unlock Turkanas’ potential for economic change.
“Turkana acknowledges the central role of peace in driving economic change and unlocking the potential of Lake Turkana which has been a source of conflicts between Kenya-Ethiopia border areas. Through this form of regional cooperation, we can unlock the full potential of Lake Turkana instead of turning it into a source of conflicts,” DG Erus said.
On his part, Dr. Bosha Bombe Reta confirmed that Ethiopia was equally ready to work with County Government of Turkana in promoting peace building efforts implemented through the DCA..
Richard Onyonka, Nicholas Omwalo of DCA Kenya alongside Achayo Agnes (DCA South Sudan) and Dida Rasso (DCA Ethiopia) were present. David Kangole of TUPADO, the local implementing partner was also present.
