Turkana County Steering Group to audit partners for compliance and accountability

Lodwar, 23rd July 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

The County Steering Group (CSG) will audit all interventions by development partners to boost coordination, accountability and ensure compliance with project implementation goals.

This was announced by the interim CSG co-chairs, Deputy Director for Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Mike Aupe and Turkana Central Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Kipkorir, during a meeting attended by representatives of state and non-state development actors.

Director Aupe said the process is already underway and a team of officers has been deployed to selected project sites to commence the exercise.

“I led a team that visited Komio in Urum, where Save the Children is implementing health outreach in hard-to-reach areas. What we saw was encouraging and we call upon other partners to borrow lessons,” he said.

The Director added that a recent survey of development partners working in the county was meant to ensure proper coordination of interventions and create benchmarks for an honest assessment of the work done by partners.

According to the Director, the CSG had also resolved to form a team of sector leads to coordinate interventions at the level of the 11 sector working groups going forward.

During the meeting, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) presented the 2026 Long Rains Assessment and the Food and Nutrition Assessment Reports for validation.

NDMA County Drought Coordinator Lordman Lekalkuli said data for the report was sourced from all sectors susceptible to changes in rainfall patterns, including Education, Health, Water, Agriculture, Livestock and household level purchasing power.

“From this level, the report will be forwarded to the Kenya Food Security Steering Group (KFSSG) to inform the Integrated Phase Classification process, which determines the county’s level of vulnerability to drought,” he said.

Lekalkuli noted that the report indicated a possibility of worsening conditions over the next few months if the off-season June-August rains fail.

DCC Kipkorir added that the process leading to the adoption of the report was inclusive and consultative, and urged partners to consult the document once finalized to guide future interventions.

The DCC also called on development partners to consider initiating interventions targeting the boy child, saying their consistent exclusion was predisposing the group to neglect.

Other issues discussed during the meeting included the county’s support to the Kimormor health program, coordinated spot checks of programs, and reporting templates.
