The Deputy Governor, Dr John Erus, hosted a team from KALRO to discuss the possibilities of establishing a research centre in the county to enhance agricultural productivity and improve livestock management in the region.
Dr Erus emphasized the importance of adopting new technologies in agriculture, including advancements in crop varieties, pest management strategies, and sustainable farming practices.
“Involving the local community in agricultural research will ensure effective implementation of new strategies and improve the dissemination of KALRO’s findings to farmers,” he said.
In the meeting, Dr Paddy Likhayo, KALRO Director of Food Crop Development Institute, highlighted that they conduct research to address agricultural challenges, and they require about 700 acres of land for crop trials, livestock breeding programs, and sustainable farming initiatives, among others.
In response to the request, DG Erus stated the county government will review the land allocation process in line with existing policies.
Dr Erus also noted that the administration is committed to supporting research-driven solutions to enhance food security, stating, “We recognize the value of research in transforming agriculture and livestock management. The county government will engage relevant departments to assess land availability and guide the necessary approvals.”
The KALRO team later met with the Turkana NLC Coordinator, Mark Ewesit, for further deliberations.
The meeting was also attended by Chris Eregae, Acting Chief Officer, Office of the Deputy Governor, and the KALRO team, including Dr Thomas Kwambai, Andrew Aleper, and Jennifer Toto.
