COUNTY GOVERNMENT CONDUCTS LIVESTOCK RESTOCKING TO AID PASTORALISTS IN TURKANA EAST SUB-COUNTY

Nakatongwa – March 8, 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

Two hundred and seventy pastoral households in Lokori/Kochodin and Katilia wards have received goats and sheep as part of a county-led restocking initiative aimed at mitigating the severe effects of drought.

A total of 1,785 animals have been distributed to the households hit hard by the dry season experienced across the arid regions. The selection of beneficiaries was conducted through a fair, community-led process.

Speaking during the distribution exercise in Naukotlem-Katilia, County Director for Livestock Production Bobby Ekadon emphasized the initiative’s focus on supporting the most vulnerable members of the community, particularly the elderly.

“We are restocking to assist families affected by drought. Our priority is to support the most vulnerable households,” Ekadon stated.

The restocking exercise has been carried out in various locations, including Nakatong’wa, Kaaruko, Lokosimekori, and Naukotlem. Each household has received between five and ten shoats, depending on their level of need.

One of the beneficiaries in Nakatongwa, Akorot Egialan, shared how the prolonged drought had wiped out his livestock.

“The five goats I received will be significant in rebuilding my herd. I am committed to restocking, especially during the rainy season, as pastoralism is my livelihood,” he said.

Ekeno Emase, another recipient from Naukotlem, expressed her gratitude to the county government for the support.

“I am grateful for this initiative. These goats will help us recover and sustain our families after the devastating losses we suffered during the drought,” she said.

Katilia Member of County Assembly, Alphonse Loteder and his Lokori/Kochodin counterpart Willy Napuyo, who oversaw the distribution, urged residents to take good care of the animals.

They said that they would continue advocating for increased budget allocations for livestock feeds, veterinary services, and further restocking efforts for support the pastoralists.
