The County Government of Turkana has on Tuesday distributed Non-Food Items (NFI) including, 50 family kits and 100 buckets to 130 households to restart their life, two weeks after fishermen were adversely attacked in Todonyang, Turkana North.
Leading the distribution of the NFIs in Todonyang, the County Executive for Trade, Cooperatives, Gender and Youth Affairs, Roseline Aite who condoled with the families said, the senior county officials have been on the ground from the time of incident to support in the rescue mission that was immediately launched.
Additionally, she says, “the distribution of NFIs is part of the county government’s bigger plan to respond to the humanitarian crisis and restore the lost livelihoods. My team will on Wednesday distribute 1500 bags of maize. Out of these, 300 for Lowareng’ak, 700 for the victims in Todonyang, as well as 500 bags for the pastoralist kraals in Merikuka.”
The Trade CECM said the county government has also delivered 150 bags of livestock supplementary feeds that will benefit 130 households.
CECM Aite also encouraged them to form groups that will eventually result in cooperative societies that would benefit them of the Cooperative Enterprise Development Fund.
The unreliable weather conditions stalled H.E. Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai Napotikan’s travel to Todonyang to condole with the berieved families and kick-off government’s intervention efforts. The governor will be joining the families soon.
The Chief Officer for Administration and Disaster Management, David Maraka, assured the victims of the attack of the government’s support during this time of need.
He said, “the government has made necessary plans to restore all the lost livelihoods so that life returns to its normalcy.”
His counterpart, Evans Lomodei of Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, stated that the county government through has swiftly mobilized support to restore the livelihoods of affected fisherfolk in Todonyang.
“As part of the ongoing response, the Department has successfully delivered two large patrol fibreglass boats (MV Kopito (280HP) and MV Nail (85HP) to enhance security and surveillance in Lake Turkana. In supporting sustainable fishing activities, 300 fishing nets, 3000 floaters, and 1500 manila ropes have been delivered to Todonyang for distribution.”
According to Lomodei, four out of 17 engines to equip wooden boats have already been delivered to the site to improve efficiency and restore the lost livelihoods during the attack.
He also noted that 12 other boats are under construction at the Catholic Mission in Todonyang, with one almost complete at the Coast Guard yard in Lowareng’ak.
Agnes Ekutan and Bernard Etukon, both beneficiaries of the NFIs response, could not hide their excitement after acknowledging the ongoing response from the county government saying the intervention is timely, even though they are still mourning their loved ones.
Other senior county government officials present were; Samwuel Ekale (CCO – Planning), Phoebe Kaaman (Advisor to the Governor), Brenda Engomo (Sub-county Administration, Turkana North), and Christopher Achillo (Assistant Director, Disaster).
