Arongat Priscilla, 27, a widow with five children, who lost two boats with 58 fishing nets during the Todonyang incident, is among the 130 vulnerable families to receive relief food from the County Government of Turkana. These families lost their kins and source of livelihood, after the fishermen were attacked in the recent past in Todonyang, Turkana North.
The County Executive for Trade Co-operatives, Gender and Youth Affairs, Roseline Aite led a multi-sectoral team in the distribution of 450 bags of maize to the victims of attack in Todonyang, while 250 to the families in Kanamukuny, Kapedor, Nakinu, Narogo, Lowoiluk and Ekitela.
“On behalf of the county government, we condole with the families which are still bereaved and those still searching the missing ones. Our prayers are with you all during this difficult time. May you find peace and solace in your hearts,” the Trade CECM said.
In restoring the lost livelihoods, CECM revealed there are 17 wooden boats mounted with engines, as well as 300 fishing gears, that the Governor would soon come to distribute them to the affected families.
Accompanied by the Chief Officers David Maraka of Administration and Disaster Management, and Samwuel Ekale of Economic Planning, they also distributed 150 bags of livestock supplementary feeds, provided by the Livestock Department, to the 130 households.
The senior county officials also took the opportunity to inspect the nearby Todonyang Market after the distribution, as a business alternative to complement the families fishing economy.
Reiterating on need to benefit from Biashara Fund, CECM Aite told them to seize the opportunity once the process officially starts. Reportedly, the County Executive said the market is 80% complete. She asked the contractor to speed up the process so that the residents in Todonyang would start enjoying the benefits of the facility by diversifying their livelihoods.
Chief Maraka told the residents in Todonyang that the relief is part of the bigger part of the county’s commitment to ensure all those affected are returned to their normalcy, adding the normal government’s programming still stands.
Arongat acknowledged the support from the county government saying, “we are grateful for the support of our government at this time of need. The support should not be the first and the last considering our current vulnerable state as it is going to take us time to come to terms with the situation.”
300 more bags of maize procured by the county government were distributed to the vulnerable families in Lowareng’ak, which were part of the victims and survivors of the fishermen attack in Todonyang.
Other senior county government officers present were Evans Lomodei (Chief Officer, Fisheries and Aquaculture), Phoebe Kaaman (Advisor to the Governor), and Christopher Achillo (Assistant Director, Disaster Management).
