THE GOVERNMENT HANDS OVER SITE FOR LOKWII IRRIGATION SCHEME FENCING TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY

The Department of Agriculture and Land Reclamation has handed over Site for the fencing of Lokwii irrigation scheme fencing project in Turkana East sub-county.

The activity, which costs Kshs 30 million shillings, aims to enhance agricultural productivity for farmers in the Lokwii and Lotubae village units by protecting the irrigation scheme from livestock and bandit incursions.

Richard Lokoyan, the Director of Irrigation and Land Reclamation, underscored the county government’s commitment to supporting local farmers as part of its broader strategy to address food security.

“The fencing of this scheme will help farmers to minimise losses attributed to damages caused by Livestock & Wildlife, protect and manage water sources more efficiently and protect the scheme against environmental threats,”Lokoyan stated.

He also assured attendees that the contractor would adhere to legal guidelines and the specifications outlined in the Bill of Quantities (B&Q), ensuring the delivery of quality work.

Willy Napuyo, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Lokori/Kochodin ward, urged the community, particularly the Project Management Committee(PMC) to collaborate with the contractor to ensure the project’s sustainability. He expressed gratitude to the county government for prioritizing initiatives in his ward.

“We are the gatekeepers of this community, and we will support this project to the end for the benefit of our community,” said Hosea Lotiir, the chairperson of the Lokubae irrigation scheme.

The ceremony was attended by several officials, including Pius Ekidor -Senior Accountant, Samwel Oloo – Engineer, Hillary Saina- Engineer ,Robert Keter – Engineer, Ruth Kormait – Chief Supply Chain Management Officer ,Willy Ekaran, Village Administrator of Lokwii; Felistus Ekuwom, Village Administrator of Lotubae; and Area Chief Johnlane Ekaran.
