DG ERUS, CENTRE FOR HUMANITARIAN CHANGE DISCUSS CLIMATE RESILIENCE RESEARCH

Lodwar- June 20, 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)– Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus hosted a delegation from the Centre for Humanitarian Change (CHC) to discuss ongoing collaboration under the Health System Resilience to Climate Shocks project.

The initiative, launched in March 2025 and running through December 2026, is part of a broader programme involving 34 health resilience projects across the Horn of Africa.

Funded by international health research partners, the project aims to strengthen health systems in the face of climate-related shocks, with a focus on rural water and sanitation, nutrition, and livelihoods.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr Erus emphasized the importance of institutionalized research frameworks in shaping inclusive and effective county-level interventions.

“Research-driven approaches have enabled us to address key community needs across ECDE centres, health facilities, and remote villages,” said the Deputy Governor. “We rely on credible data to inform decision-making at all stages—from planning to implementation.”

The Deputy Governor further commended the role of research institutions in supporting the county’s response to emerging climate-related challenges such as drought, flooding, and increasing malnutrition levels.

“Turkana is fortunate to have access to expert institutions and systems that help us build resilience in the face of environmental and health stressors,” he added.

CHC researcher Anne Khisa noted that the project integrates community perspectives and socio-economic analysis to develop responsive health sector interventions.

“Stakeholder engagement, continuous training, and evidence-based policy are central to achieving sustainable health outcomes in Turkana and beyond,” said Khisa.

Present during the visit were Mike Aupe, Deputy Director for Resource Mobilization and Donor Coordination and Jackson Wachira, a research fellow from CHC.

CHC officials expressed their commitment to strengthening research collaboration with Turkana County, with findings expected to benefit health resilience efforts in other counties and countries across the region.
