COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND GIZ TO LAUNCH CLIMATE-RESILIENT AGRICULTURE INITIATIVE

The County Government has partnered with the German development agency GIZ to launch an ambitious Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Pastoralism project set to run from 2025 through 2028.

The initiative will strengthen community resilience against climate shocks while creating sustainable income opportunities for residents.

During a preparatory meeting with GIZ representatives, Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation David Maraka emphasised the project’s focus on maximising agricultural potential in Turkana’s fertile riverine areas. “By optimising our use of harvested groundwater resources, we can establish year-round crop production systems,” Maraka explained. He stressed the parallel need to enhance extension services and practical training programs for farmers, agricultural staff, and students.

GIZ consultant Antti Seelaff outlined the project’s comprehensive approach, which will build upon existing farmer organisations and introduce innovative techniques like flood-based farming. A key component involves developing commercial fodder production to create new revenue streams for pastoralists.

Agriculture Director Aaron Nanok highlighted the program’s emphasis on developing resilient crop varieties and sustainable seed multiplication systems. Irrigation Director Richard Lokoyan proposed expanding successful models like the drip irrigation system at Nazarene Farm in Kanamkemer, noting its potential for wider replication across the county.

The planning session brought together senior county officials, including Deputy Agriculture Director Emmanuel Esau, Administration Deputy Director Dorcas Ejore, and Assistant Irrigation Director Jackson Ewat, alongside GIZ representatives Flora Kanga and Francis Lobongo.

The three-year initiative represents a significant investment in climate-smart food systems for Turkana County, combining German technical expertise with local agricultural knowledge to strengthen food security and economic opportunities.
