Kaaleng- July 7, 2025 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

Kaaleng health centre has completed the construction of new eight-bed capacity male and female inpatient wards—fully funded through claims from the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). This development marks a significant step in enhancing healthcare delivery in Turkana North.
The new wards are expected to decongest the facility, enhance patients’ privacy, and improve the overall quality of care for the community.
The County Executive Committee Member for Health and Sanitation, Dr Epem Joseph Esekon highlighted that Kaaleng’s success shows that with strong community participation and proper management of SHA funds, we can scale up infrastructure and services across Turkana.
“This is just the beginning, we urge every household to register for Turkana to showcase more gains for the good of our people,” CECM stated.
On the other hand, Chief Officer for Medical Services, Dr Gilchrist Lokoel shared that this project is a clear example of how social health insurance can transform rural health facilities.
“By registering, residents are not just protecting themselves, they are building the future of healthcare in Turkana,” said Dr Lokoel.
According to MOH Turkana North, Daniel Lokiriama, this progress proves that health insurance is not just about personal medical bills, it’s a tool for developing better health facilities in our communities.
“These new wards are a result of health insurance claims, and proof that when the community embraces SHA, we all benefit,” he said.
The residents are encouraged to take advantage of the ongoing county-wide, one-week Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) to register on Social Health Authority (SHA) to secure their health and overall healthcare system.
