Climate change committees empowered for climate resilience

The climate change planning and project management committees from Kanamkemer and Lodwar Township wards have been sensitized to strengthen their role in the implementation of climate resilience projects.

The training was facilitated by the Directorate of Climate Change in collaboration with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).

The session, tailored in Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) sub-projects in the two wards, also aimed at enhancing knowledge on the program’s Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) and the committee roles.

Addressing the committees, the Sub-County Administrator Turkana Central, Esther Kiyong’a emphasized on the importance of community involvement in project execution.

“It is important to have functional project management committees before implementation of any county projects. Therefore, understanding the role you play in ensuring accountability and ownership at the grassroots is crucial,” she said.

Victor Lokutan, a representative from DRC, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting community-level engagement on climate change and peacebuilding.

“We value the collaboration we’ve had with the County Government of Turkana in rolling out joint activities, and we will continue to support future engagements and workshops,” he said.

Present were Kevin Ojiem, the Sub-County Climate Change Officer and FLLoCA GRM focal person and Kanamkemer Ward Administrator Joshua Lomechu.

The meeting is part of ongoing efforts under the FLLoCA program to empower local structures and ensure effective and inclusive implementation of climate adaptation initiatives.
