Kakuma, 10th July 2025 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

The county has moved with speed to address water supply disruption in Kakuma, working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure services are restored and sustained for residents.
The boreholes affected were borehole 1,2 and 3 which collectively supply water to over 70% of the area’s residents, prompting protests and call for immediate action from KALWASCO, the local water service provider.
In an effort to quell the protest and restore normal supply, county officials met representatives of the residents, where the Water Services CECM Willyjustus Lopeyok Akwalata pledged to institute corrective interventions.
“We have agreed on a three-point way forward to restore and sustain water services,” said CECM Akwalata. “First, the County will facilitate restoration of power to the boreholes in coordination with KPLC. Second, we will provide 3,000 litres of fuel to support interim operations. Lastly, the KALWASCO board will take the lead in streamlining staff and operational procedures to enhance long-term efficiency,”
The CECM said that the county will take steps towards a long-term solution by pursuing implementation of the Kakuma Municipality Water Master Plan in collaboration with partners.
Terming the demonstration a strategy to amplify their voices to authorities, Charles Lokiru, a resident shared that the disruption had led to children missing school, mothers queuing for hours in search of water, and unaffordable prices by vendors.
The resolutions meeting was also attended by Area MCA Eliud Amoni, Director Administration Patrick Imana, Director Water Services Paul Lotum, Sub-County Administrator Christine Nalemsekon, Kakuma Municipality and KALWASCO management, and a representative from the office of the DCC Patrick Omuse.
