GOVERNMENT COMMITS TO BOOST AGRIBUSINESS IN TURKANA FOR SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Katilu, 11 July 2025 (Public Communication and Media Relations) – The County Government of Turkana, in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), has launched a new initiative to strengthen the agribusiness sector and promote socioeconomic development in the region.

The announcement was made during a three-day Agribusiness Fair held at the Katilu Aggregation Centre under the theme, “Sustainable and Inclusive Socioeconomic Empowerment of Farmers through Market Linkages and Technologies.”

Key stakeholders in the agricultural sector – including government officials, farmers, and representatives from various organisations – participated in the event.

County Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation, David Maraka, urged local farmers to diversify their production by growing both food and cash crops to boost household incomes.

“There are designated funds secured by WFP to procure green grams from farmers in Katilu, Kalemnyang, and Lokori at competitive prices,” said Maraka.

He reiterated the County Government’s commitment to improving agricultural productivity through capacity building for lead farmers, provision of farm machinery, and the distribution of climate-resilient seeds.

Head of the WFP Office in Lodwar, Sarah Ayodi, praised the potential of Turkana’s farmers, stating that they have the ability to feed the local population more comfortably. She called on other development partners to collaborate with the County Government and local communities to achieve food security in Turkana.

Coordination Specialist at the United Nations Resident Coordination Office in Lodwar, Susan Aletia, highlighted the challenges pastoralists face and underscored the need to transition into agriculture as a sustainable livelihood strategy. “It’s high time we venture into agriculture to make a living,” she said.

Erastus Esekon, a 39-year-old farmer from Katilu whose farm was showcased as a model during the fair, expressed optimism about the future of farming in Turkana. “With the right training, climate-resilient seeds, farm machinery, and access to markets, we can secure the future of our generations by producing adequate food,” he said.

Director of Agriculture, Aaron Nanok, thanked all agribusiness partners for supporting the fair and for educating farmers on best practices to improve food quality and productivity in the county.

The event was also attended by Assistant County Commissioner, Edison Nyachwaye, along with other senior government officials.
