Nadapal, 26th July 2025 (Governor’s Press Service) – Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai today joined leaders from Kenya and South Sudan in Nadapal to commemorate one year of peaceful coexistence between the Turkana and Toposa communities.
Speaking at the event, Governor Lomorukai reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to transitioning from dialogue to tangible investments in peacebuilding infrastructure.
He emphasised the need for schools, healthcare facilities, and road networks to support lasting harmony among border communities.
He described the growing cooperation and resource sharing along the Kenya–South Sudan border as a sign of successful diplomacy.
“The benefits of peace are visible and measurable,” he said. “Roads that were once impassable due to conflict are now thriving routes for the movement of goods, people, and ideas.”
Governor Lomorukai, who was accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr John Erus, acknowledged the key roles played by President William Ruto and President Salva Kiir in supporting the peace process.
He also praised Governor Louis Lobong of Eastern Equatoria State and the government of South Sudan for promoting peace through cross-border dialogue and community engagement.
He said the transformation witnessed today was the result of deliberate efforts and a shared appreciation of common heritage.
On his part, Governor Lobong stated that peace dialogues remain the most effective path to development and mutual respect across borders.
He encouraged the Toposa community to uphold peace and strengthen good relations with their neighbours.He commended both communities for maintaining peace and trust over the past year and delivered a goodwill message from President Salva Kiir.
Governor Lobong also praised the leadership of Governor Lomorukai for driving peace initiatives forward.
He urged the communities to put aside boundary disputes and focus on their shared ancestry and cultural ties. He called on all stakeholders to protect peace as a treasured value within the Ateker community.
Ateker Peace Envoy John Munyes described the year of stability as a significant milestone that had renewed trust and shared prosperity among the border communities.
Turkana Woman Representative Cecil Ishuu echoed the importance of shared heritage and culture as a foundation for stronger bonds and the end of historic hostilities.
Other leaders who addressed the gathering included County Commissioner Julius Kavita, County Secretary Dr Richard Ekai, and County Assembly Speaker Charles Lokiyoto.
