County, National Irrigation Authority to strengthen Irrigation Partnership

The County Government of Turkana is set to partner with National Irrigation Authority (NIA) to support the existing irrigation projects to enhance food security in Turkana.

County Secretary Ambassador Richard Ekai commended the partnership with NIA. He said the county’s administration is ready to partner with Authority to ensure irrigation projects to transform livelihoods through food security in Turkana, aligning with the Governor’s Nine-Point Agenda.

“Collaboration and partnership is the cornerstone of progress; together, we can turn challenges into opportunities, every effort in irrigation is a step closer to achieving food security in Turkana,” CS said.

He added that County Government in close partnership with NIA, will be keen to support infrastructure maintenance and repair, improve access to government-subsidized fertilizer, and address the shortage of tractors and other machinery critical for irrigation.

The National Irrigation Authority’s Director of Irrigation Management, Eng Jairus Serede, expressed the readiness to partner with the County Government.

“Turkana has enormous potential in irrigation, and with the right partnership, we can unlock this potential to secure adequate food and create opportunities for farmers. With this in mind, we seek for 15 hectares of land for irrigation activities, and, memorandum of understanding will formalize this engagement,” Eng Serede said.

Both the County and NIA reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that ongoing and future irrigation projects will directly improve livelihoods and promote long-term food security for Turkana residents.

The meeting was also attended by Eng Mark Achila (Chief Officer, Water Services), Eng Felix Shiundu (Upper Rift Region), Corredy Jemurugur (Agronomist), Juma Philip (Scheme Manager, Katilu), Richard Lokoyan (County Director of Irrigation and Land Reclamation), and Peter Lomauge (County Director of Security and Protocol).
