Lodwar- September 16, 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

Following a five-day training on epidemic preparedness at the grassroots level for 30 community-based workers from Lokichoggio and Lokiriama cross-border sub-counties; 13 of their supervisors have been sensitized on the same.

The supervisors include county directors, disease surveillance coordinators, and sub-county veterinary, public health, and environment officers from Lokichoggio and Lokiriama cross-border sub-counties.

The two-day capacity building training is part of the One Health approach under the PREPARE Project and is a County Government initiative in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS).

The training focused on three core areas: Epidemic Preparedness and Response in Communities (EPiC), Community-Based Surveillance (CBS), and Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA).

Over the next five days, a selected team from the county government and KRCS will be conducting a five-day surveillance exercise in Lokiriama Sub-County. This will include a house-to-house KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices) assessment, focus group discussions targeting Community Health Promoters, Community Disease Reporters, and community leaders, and finally the landscape survey targeting county government program leads.

The overall goal is surveillance and putting the cross-border communities at the centre of preparedness against potential epidemics and vaccine-preventable and zoonotic diseases from the neighbouring countries.
