Turkana prepares for the next phase of refugee response program under Danish funding

Deputy Governor Dr John Erus has reiterated County’s commitment towards working with partners to deliver Integrated service delivery to the refugee population currently hosted by the county at Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement scheme.

Speaking at a meeting in which a delegation of the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared review reports of the ongoing program, DG Erus described refugee response efforts as the cornerstone to building a positive host-refugee relations for the two communities sharing residence of Kakuma and Kalobeyei in Turkana West.

The Intergrated Refugee Response Program (IRRP) under review commenced in 2023 with an investment of 115 million USD through the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and funding from three Danish philanthropic foundations LEGO, Grundfos and Novo Nordisk. The program aims to transition refugee handling from humanitarian approaches to inclusive government led models that benefits host and refugees and boosts self reliance.

In the first two years of implementation, the IRRP program successfully managed to lay ground for better service delivery in respect to Water, health and vocational training for capacity enhancement.

According to the Danish team lead, Kanar Salam Patruss, the results of the review would be used to design the next phase of the program scheduled to begin early next year.
