County, Central Rift Valley Water set to improve Eliye–Kalokol Project

Eliye – 9th October 2025 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

County Department of Water Services and the Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (CRVWWDA) will partner to enhance the Eliye–Kalokol Water Project to improve water access in the two centres and villages.

The project, implemented by CRVWWDA under the 2016/17 Equalisation Fund, was executed in three phases, with the third phase currently underway. The scope of the project includes the development of Eliye Springs, a 225 m³ steel tank, a 42-kilometre pipeline, six water kiosks, five cattle troughs, and the rehabilitation of a steel tank in Kalokol.

Leading the assessment team, County Executive for Water Services Willyjustus Lopeyok emphasized the need to drill additional boreholes and cluster villages and centres for improved water distribution.

“We plan to develop separate water sources for Eliye and Kalokol, while the villages located between the two will benefit from the connecting pipeline,” he said.

Upon visiting the Eliye Springs development – the only project water source – the Turkana Central Sub-County Water Officer, Vinson Ekai, noted that plans to retrieve pumping and solar equipment should be a priority, as they are currently threatened by the rising waters of Lake Turkana.

Member of the County Assembly for Kang’atotha Ward, Hon Alany Mathew, led the team to potential project improvement sites in Eliye, Natumkomwa, Lobolo, Loyoro, and Ngineyotunga.

He further emphasized the importance of engaging the community before the project’s implementation and ensuring that institutions, especially schools, have access to water.

CRVWWDA representative Kennedy Kurgat stated that a full assessment of all potential sites in the area would be conducted to inform project improvements and future water infrastructure development.

With the Eliye Springs development out of commission, the team agreed that a short-term measure to get water into the pipeline would be to connect boreholes in Ngineyotunga, while a long-term solution would be identified after further assessment.

Other members of the assessment team included Eng Daniel Kimani from National Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and Eng Gerishon Gitonga from the North Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency.
