Lodwar, 16th October 2025 (Public Communication and Media Relations)
Residents of Lodwar Municipality have urged the County Government to improve existing infrastructure and establish new public facilities to meet the growing needs of the town’s expanding population.
During the quarterly ‘ Municipality Area Residents Citizens Fora a public engagement forum held to review development priorities and progress, participants highlighted inadequate power supply, poor road networks, insufficient street lighting, limited public sanitation facilities, and lack of markets as key challenges requiring urgent attention.
“The Municipality management has done well. However, Kanamkemer is growing rapidly. There is a need to extend existing roads to reach the emerging settlements,” said a resident of Naotin Peter Lojuk during the meeting.
Another resident raised concerns over encroachment of public land reserved for social amenities, warning that uncontrolled settlements could affect future development plans.
“We run the risk of encroachment on land meant for schools and hospitals. We suggest that the Municipality fences all hospitals before the issue becomes a real challenge,” Charles Ekeno said.
Residents also called for the establishment of new markets, construction of sheds for boda boda operators, repair and installation of streetlights, and construction of public toilets across the Municipality.
In Township Ward, residents went further to propose the creation of coordination structures to enhance communication between the community and the Municipality administration.
“It is true we need streetlights and better ways of managing solid waste across town. However, we also need channels through which we can reach out to the Municipality administration and maintain continuous communication,” another resident said.
The forums in both Township and Kanamkemer wards were led by Municipality Manager Benjamin Tukei and members of the Lodwar Municipality Board, who pledged to review the residents’ input and incorporate it into future development plans.
