Kainuk , 23rd October 2025 (Governor’s Press Service)- Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai today visited Kaputir Ward to condole with the families of the National Police Reservists (NPRs) who were allegedly killed by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers on Wednesday.
During the visit, the Governor also made stopovers at Kalemngorok, Kakong, and Kaputir Junction, where he engaged residents who had blocked the Kitale–Lodwar Highway to protest the rising insecurity in Turkana South.
In his remarks, Governor Lomorukai condemned the actions of the security personnel, accusing them of shooting and killing NPRs who had reportedly surrendered and identified themselves. He assured residents that the County leadership will seek to engage senior officials within the Ministry of Defence to ensure that justice is served and the perpetrators are held accountable.
The Governor reiterated the urgent need to flush out bandits hiding in the Turkana South Game Reserve as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace in the North Rift region. He stressed that the Game Reserve is a protected area under County management and should not be unlawfully occupied.
Governor Lomorukai further noted that the Ministry of Interior had gazetted the area as a protected reserve, hence no one should reside there illegally. He regretted that innocent NPRs, who were providing security to farmers at the Lokwar Irrigation Scheme, lost their lives in such unfortunate circumstances and called for overhaul of security officers due to partiality.
He criticised leaders who were exploiting on insecurity and banditry for political gain and questioned how such attacks continue to occur despite the heavy deployment of security personnel in Kainuk.
Dr. Lomorukai disclosed that he had spoken to President William Ruto to request an extension of the ongoing voter registration period.
He also briefed the Head of State on the worsening security situation in Turkana South.Woman Representative Cecilia Asinyen Ishuu condemned the incident, noting that the recovered cartridges demonstrated the brutality of the KDF officers involved.
She echoed the Governor’s call for justice and demanded that the affected NPR families be compensated by the government.County Assembly Speaker Charles Lokiyoto emphasised the importance of dialogue between leaders and residents as a lasting solution to border-related conflicts.
The Governor was accompanied by senior County officials including County Executives Wiljustus Lopeyok (Water Services), Dr. Michael Eregae (Agriculture), Dr. Joseph Epem (Health), Benson Lokwang (Roads), and Antony Apalia (Natural Resources).A host of Members of the County Assembly, led by Deputy Speaker Gilbert Topos, were also in attendance.
