Turkana County joined the world in commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), with leaders calling for stronger systems to improve service delivery and expand opportunities for people living with disabilities.

The event, held at Moi Gardens in Lodwar, brought together national and county officials, representatives of PWD organizations, and community members.

Governor Dr. Jeremiah Lomorukai reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to disability inclusion, citing recent progress in employment, the passage of key policy frameworks, and the strengthening of governance structures that support PWD affairs.

“We are committed to ensuring that inclusion is not just a policy statement but a lived reality for all residents of Turkana,” the Governor said.

Acting County Executive Committee Member for Education and Social Protection Dr. Anthony Apalia, and his Health counterpart Dr. Epem Joseph, echoed the Governor’s remarks, pledging continued support to programmes that advance the rights and welfare of PWDs.

However, local leaders of the disability movement used the platform to highlight persisting gaps.Turkana County PWDs Chairperson Lokusi noted that Turkana has established robust governance structures for disability affairs but urged the County Government to recognize and consistently support them.

The event also featured exhibitions on community-based care models and free medical assessments conducted by the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD).

The national delegation included Nicholas Kitua, Director of Planning in the State Department for Social Protection, and Dr. Lynet Ochuma, Acting Secretary of the Directorate of Social Development under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.

The event was also attended by more than 20 development partners who supported diverse components of the event.
