Timothy Ekeno emerged winner of the 2025 Tobong’u Lore wheelchair race after outpacing a field of 27 contestants in a five-kilometre contest, clocking 23 minutes to take first place.
Michael Epetet finished second, crossing the line three minutes later in 26 minutes, in a race that formed a key highlight of this year’s Tobong’u Lore cultural festival.
The wheelchair race, which underscores the festival’s commitment to disability inclusion and adaptive sports, was flagged off by County Secretary Ambassador Richard Ekai, accompanied by Acting County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Sports and Social Protection Dr. Anthony Apalia. Chief Officer for Education and Social Protection Paul Lodunga was also in attendance.
The event comes against the backdrop of significant strides by the Turkana County Government in strengthening the legal and policy framework to support persons living with disabilities.
Ongoing initiatives include enhanced funding for disability programs, provision of assistive devices, and efforts to improve enrolment of children with disabilities in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres.
Turkana has continued to distinguish itself on the national stage in disability sports, remaining a perennial top performer at the NONDO Games.
In 2025, the county also made history by hosting the national World Disability Day celebrations for the first time.
