At the ongoing 9th edition of Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival, the County Government and the Fisheries Partners have showcased their innovations at the Exhibition Centre in Lodwar.
The annual Tobong’u Lore festival, celebrating Turkana’s cultural heritage, drew over 100 exhibitors including government bodies, private firms and development partners when President Ruto visited and graced the event on Tuesday this week.
“The Fisheries Sector is set to grow,” says Hon Peter Eregae Ikaru, County Chief Officer for Fisheries and Aquaculture, commending the partners and staff for teamwork at this year’s exhibition. “With this energy, we are moving forward in the right direction,” he said.
In addition, Chief Ikaru said after President Ruto visited the Fisheries booth on fresh Nile Perch and Tilapia Fish, displayed on three solar-powered tricycle mounted fridge with ice by Adili Hubs, has seen many fish mongers buy the fresh fish from the new Naruko fish market at Ekalees Cultural Centre.
Chief Ikaru added that after president Ruto’s visit to Fisheries booth, fishmongers are flocking to the new Naruko fish market to pick the fresh Nile Perch and Tilapia at the Exhibition.
The County Fisheries Officer, John Bett, who has been coordinating activities in exhibition, said the display, unlike last year, has been a game-changer for women-led enterprises showcasing climate-smart fish preservation technologies using green energy, empowering community members especially women in the sector.
Bett further said the exhibitors have added value to fish products, crafting leather goods like shoes, belts and hand bags.
Partners who supported exhibition included; WFP, TUPADO, SAPCONE, Adili Solar Hubs and Keep It Cool.
