The County Government has partnered with the Turkana Pastoralists Development Organization (TUPADO) to implement a one-year project aimed at strengthening inclusive land governance, with a focus on women’s rights and participation.

The project was launched during a joint inception meeting by the County, partnerships and the UN Donor/partner Coordination office.

The project will be implemented in Loima and Turkana Central sub-counties, targeting Turkwel, Kang’atosa and Kalokol wards to promote sustainable land management while enhancing women’s access to land, resources and decision-making spaces.

Speaking during the meeting, Chief Officer for Resource Mobilisation, Partnerships and Donor Coordination Janerose Tioko explained the importance of partnerships in addressing land governance challenges and advancing gender equity.

“There is a need to empower women because they are catalysts of change in our communities,” she said.

Tioko noted that strategic partnerships and coordinated donor engagement have strengthened leadership dialogue and promoted inclusivity in county decision-making processes particularly land management.

Deputy Director for Resource Mobilisation, Partnerships and Donor Coordination, Mike Aupe said the county is developing a centralized data management tool to improve coordination among stakeholders and enhance access to information.

“The database will help reduce duplication of activities and ensure resources are optimally utilized,” Aupe said.

TUPADO’s Deputy Executive Director and Director of Programmes, David Kang’ole, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working closely with the county and stakeholders to advance women’s access to land and participation in governance processes.

Turkana Central Sub-County Administrator Esther Kiyonga echoed the importance of a centralized database and urged the project team to involve administrative officers down to the village level to ensure effective grassroots engagement.

Resource persons identified to support the project include officials from the National Land Commission, land adjudicators, legal experts and community land registration specialists.

The meeting brought together representatives from the county departments of Economic Planning, Lands, Trade, Youth Affairs and Sub-County Administration.

Development partners present included the Kenya Red Cross Society, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), DanChurch Aid (DCA) and VNG International.
