The County Government supported by the Kenya Red Cross Society and the Danish Red Cross has concluded a week-long exercise registering 2000 families affected by drought for a cash transfer program to boost food security.
The initiative also delivered food aid to 10 schools in Suguta and Lokori Kochodin.
Patrick Losike, the County Executive for Public Service, Administration, and Disaster Management confirmed that Kenya Red Cross was one of the development partners assisting the County Government in drought response efforts.
Rukia Abubakar, Regional Coordinator, Kenya Red Cross Turkana, said the intervention was coordinated through the County Steering Group to avoid duplication of efforts.
“We were mapped to cover Suguta and Lokori Kochodin, while other partners covered other hotspots,” she said.
The exercise included an assessment of future needs, with Rukia noting that the situation is dire, with people and animals at risk.
The area Chief Ekiru Alokas lauded the County and Kenya Red Cross for working with local authorities to ensure fair targeting, adding that the community participated in the enrollment process to prioritize vulnerable groups.
Local leaders welcomed the response but urged an increase in the number targeted and inclusion of animal feeds in the package.
