IPOA to establish Turkana Office, boosting access to police oversight

Turkana residents will soon access police oversight services closer to home following plans by the Independent Police Oversight Authority to establish an office in the coming month.

This was announced by IPOA delegation on a courtesy call to the County Government where they were hosted by the County Secretary Dr Richard Ekai.

Led by Justus Emeri, the IPOA team detailed that persons seeking for services from Turkana has been increasing over the years prompting the need for a county office to save the residents from having to travel all the way to Eldoret or Nairobi.

“With the establishment of an office in Turkana, we aim to bridge the gap and bring oversight closer to the people of Turkana. Our intention is to start with critical staff before transitioning to a complete service station,” he said.

County Secretary described the move as welcome and, pledged to support the authority during the setting up period.

“The county will work with you in identifying suitable office space and even provide the necessary logistical support required to enable the authority operate,” CS Richard Ekai said.

IPOA’s mandate includes receiving and investigating complaints against members of the National Police Service, monitoring police operations and promoting professionalism in the police sector.

IPOA regional coordinator for North Rift Eugene Muteshi was present. Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyang’a, Ag County Solicitor Ekai Nabenyo, Directors Ruth Esekon (Office of the Governor), Peter Lomauge (Protocol) and Chris Locheria (Public Service) were also present.
