Persons with visual impairment in Turkana County have benefited from a digital skills training programme aimed at promoting digital inclusion by equipping them with practical skills to access information, online services, and economic opportunities.

The training was organized by the Kenya Society for the Blind (KSB) in partnership with KICTANet under the Enhancing Digital Access and Community Resilience (EDACR) Project, supported through the UK Digital Access Programme.

Through hands-on sessions, participants were introduced to accessible digital tools and platforms that support communication, learning, and income-generating activities.

Samson Waweru, Executive Director of the Kenya Society for the Blind, said the initiative aims to empower visually impaired persons with the skills needed to navigate the digital world, access services, and improve their livelihoods.

“Digital access is a critical pathway to independence and opportunity for persons with visual impairment,” he said.

County Chief Officer for Gender and Youth Joseph Epuu said the initiative aligns with existing policies that support persons with disabilities.

He called for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the County Government to strengthen collaboration and ensure continuous training.

Epuu also proposed the establishment of a regional branch to expand access to services for refugees and pastoralist communities across borders, while urging beneficiaries to become ambassadors of digital inclusion within their communities.

The programme also seeks to strengthen community resilience by enabling persons with disabilities to actively participate in the digital economy and access essential services online.

Representatives from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Benson Ewoi, and Abbey Locherimoe Bornventures, Curriculum Support Officer for Special Needs Education and EARC Coordinator for Turkana County, also attended the training.
