The County Steering Group (CSG) has approved the implementation of the Creating Shared Value with Young People in the Livestock Sector (CASHA) project aimed at strengthening pastoralist livelihoods, improving food security and enhancing climate resilience among communities in Turkana.

At a meeting held in Lodwar, partners presented the project which targets 300,000 youth and women through interventions focused on improving livestock productivity, animal health services and sustainable rangeland management.

The project will be implemented by a consortium of partners led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) across Turkana East, Lokiriama, Aroo, Turkana Central, Turkana South and Loima sub-counties.

The chair and Deputy County Commissioner(DCC), Dominic Kinyanjui emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among government institutions and development partners in addressing the challenges affecting pastoralist livelihoods in the region.

“Strengthening coordination among stakeholders is key in addressing the impacts of climate variability and ensuring communities receive the support needed to sustain their livelihoods,” DCC said.

The Deputy Director for Resource Mobilisation, Partnerships and Donor Coordination noted that the project will complement ongoing county efforts to strengthen community resilience while enhancing coordination among partners working in both humanitarian and development sectors.

He added that partnerships between the county government and development agencies remain critical in responding to recurrent drought, ensuring sustainable support for vulnerable households and avoid duplication of interventions across sub-counties.

County CASHA Focal Person and Deputy Director for Veterinary Services Dr Erenius Nakadio said the initiative will play a key role in strengthening livestock-based livelihoods, which remain the backbone of the local economy.

“The project will support pastoralists through interventions aimed at improving animal health services, livestock productivity and sustainable rangeland management,” he said.

FAO representative Ambrose Ng’etich explained that the project focuses on integrated interventions aimed at stabilizing pastoral livelihoods through climate adaptation, improved livestock production and strengthening technical and entrepreneurial capacities among young people.

Additionally, Calvary Development Organisation representative Faith Akiru introduced the organisation’s programmes and areas of operation and expressed commitment to collaborate with the county government and other partners in addressing humanitarian and development needs in the county.

Representatives from the Department of Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), BOMA, International Rescue Committee, UNICEF, E 4 impact, Kenya Red Cross Society among other development partners attended the meeting.

The CSG is a coordination platform that brings together county and national government institutions alongside development partners to align their interventions across Turkana.
