Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers have undergone training aimed at strengthening foundation learning, improving curriculum delivery, and enhancing digital literacy in schools.
The capacity-building programme brought together twenty five teachers and seven ECDE ward coordinators from Turkana South and East Sub-Counties alongside thirty five teachers and nine coordinators from Turkana Central and Loima.
The sessions focused on key areas including competency based Assessment (CBA) tools and structure, components of curriculum design, interpretation of pre primary competency based curriculum design, progression of learning outcomes, and effective lesson planning among others, equipping educators with practical skills to improve classroom instruction.
The County Chief Officer (CCO) ECDE and Social Protection Paul Lodung’a acknowledged support from UNICEF, noting that partnerships remain critical in advancing digital literacy in ECDE centres.
He emphasized the need to make schools more child-friendly, promote peer counselling, and maintain consistency in teaching and mentorship.
UNICEF Education Specialist Agnes Ngonyo reiterated the importance of strong foundation learning, stressing the need for continuous capacity building and retooling of teachers to keep pace with modern technology.
She also highlighted plans to support the establishment of a model ECDE centre in the county.
The Teachers were encouraged to be innovative in their teaching approaches and to utilize locally available, cost-effective learning materials, including resources accessible through the websites of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and the Ministry of Education Kenya.
The knowledge gained, particularly on digital literacy, will help teachers deliver the curriculum more effectively and improve learning outcomes for young children.
