The County Government, in partnership with Concern Worldwide, has intensified the distribution of livestock supplementary feeds and the repositioning of veterinary vaccines and drugs across , in a bid to protect livestock and strengthen the resilience of drought-affected pastoral communities.
The initiative, launched by Governor Dr. Jeremiah Lomorukai at the Mifugo Complex in Lodwar, marks a coordinated rollout of livestock feeds, vaccines, and essential veterinary drugs aimed at reducing livestock mortality, improving herd recovery, and safeguarding pastoral livelihoods as drought conditions persist.
“Our pastoral economy depends entirely on livestock, and protecting breeding stock during drought is critical for recovery once the situation improves. This intervention will improve livestock body condition, boost milk production for household nutrition, and reduce mortality,” he said.
The programme targets drought hotspot areas including Turkwel, Lobei (Loima/Lokirima), Kaeris, Kaaleng, and Lapur (Turkana North), Kangatosa, Kerio Delta, and Kalokol (Turkana Central),Katilia and Lokori/Kochodin (Turkana East), Lopur and Letea (Turkana West); as well as Kalapata and Lokichar in Turkana South.
Speaking after the flag-off, Acting Chief Officer for Livestock Development, Hon. Peter Ikaru, commended the partnership with Concern Worldwide, noting that the intervention complements the government efforts in cushioning vulnerable communities.
He added that the County Government is set to procure 1,650 bags of supplementary feeds alongside veterinary vaccines and drugs worth KSh 35 million to reach pastoralists not previously covered.
The Department of Veterinary Services is targeting 300,000 livestock for vaccination, deworming, supportive treatment, and vector control for a period of 10 days.
Concern Worldwide Turkana Programme Manager, Isaac Echapan said that, through the SERVE Project, Concern Worldwide will distribute 6,600 bags of range cubes to 3,300 households, allocating two bags per household to sustain livestock during the critical dry period. The intervention will cost KSh 58 million.
He emphasized that the combined feed and vaccination support is designed to protect livestock health, sustain productivity, and secure household livelihoods.
“These interventions demonstrate our commitment to anticipatory action reducing the impact of drought before families are pushed deeper into crisis. Protecting livestock today safeguards nutrition, income, and resilience tomorrow,” he said.
The initiative builds on recent efforts by the national government, which distributed 8,923 bales of hay benefiting 4,461 households, alongside 10,080 bags of 50kg supplementary livestock feed through the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), reaching 10,080 households across Turkana East, Turkana South, Loima, and Turkana Central.
Later, the Governor engaged staff from the Livestock Development and Fisheries departments, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to efficient and responsive service delivery.
