The Directorate of Natural Resources in Turkana County has taken the lead in preparations for the upcoming International Day of Forests, a United Nations observance marked annually to raise awareness on the importance of all types of forests.

This year’s theme, “Forests and Economies,” emphasizes the significant contribution forests make to both local and global economies—ranging from job creation and provision of essential resources to advancing sustainable development and enhancing community well-being.

A multi-agency planning team has already outlined key activities to commemorate the day. These include large-scale tree planting initiatives, public awareness campaigns, leadership speeches, and community engagement forums aimed at promoting environmental stewardship. According to Jacob Lokwawi of the Directorate of natural resources, this yeas goal is to plant more than a thousand trees at various at the festivals venue and other locations across the County.

Following deliberations, the planners agreed to have Turkana central as the host. However, the actual location will be communicated after further deliberations. Key stakeholders involved in the planning process include Jacob Lokwawi from the Directorate of Natural Resources, Francis Lokeris representing National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Brian Koros from Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and Eyen Moses, among others.
