County Government through the Directorate of Climate Change is partnering with researchers from three leading universities to roll out a climate information system aimed at assisting local communities better prepare for drought, floods and erratic weather patterns.

This was revealed at a meeting in which the County hosted a team of researchers from the University of Nairobi, Oxford and Exeter Universities for initial discussions over the design and implementation of the program.

According to the program’s report, the initiative is designed to allow for routine collection, systematic analysis and utilization of climate data to guide decision making in a bid to reduce risks linked to misinterpretation of weather forecasts.

In his address, County Secretary Dr Richard Ekai said that improved access to reliable climate information would help timely adoption of the most appropriate adaptive measures by local Pastrolists in the protection of livestock and management of water resources.

“This is an initiative that directly contributes to the county’s goal of livelihood improvement and resilience building. When local Pastrolists are properly informed, they are better equipped to safeguard their livelihoods,” he said.

According to the Director for Climate Change George Emase, local Pastrolists remain the most affected by climate change owing to the current approaches that disseminate climate information in a method that makes it inaccessible and difficult to understand.

The Director added that the project will have a direct positive impact to the livestock, water, environment, agriculture , education and all other sectors that rely on climate information to make decisions.

Prior to full roll out, further consultations are expected as county seeks to refine the implementation plan and onboard additional stakeholders.
