The County Government, through the Directorate of Mining and Energy, on Tuesday held talks with a delegation from the State Department of Mining to clarify mandates and identify areas for joint intervention.
The Chief Officer for Mining and Energy Triza Amoni said the meeting provided an opportunity to define jurisdictions and map out potential areas for collaboration between the two levels of government.
In her remarks, Amoni reiterated the county government’s commitment to ensuring artisanal miners adhere to legislative provisions guiding the sector and benefit from mineral resources.
“We are now fully guided on areas that might have caused overlaps between county and national government authorities. We commit to play our part and support the State Department to execute its roles,” she said.
She added that the meeting resolved to establish a channel for information exchange, routine communication, and joint community engagement.
Job Onyancha, who led the State Department delegation, said the discussions produced tangible results in clarifying duties to avoid duplication.
Onyancha welcomed the inclusion of artisanal mining stakeholders in the meeting, noting that clarity of specific responsibilities, work best when all players are involved.
“Like the county government, our goal is to see those engaged in the mining business thrive and drive the economy of the nation. This will best be achieved by working collaboratively with the county, where every entity is fully aware of its mandate and jurisdiction,” he said.
Present were other representatives from the State Department including Christopher Odhiambo, Josephat Yego, Boniface Samal and Hillary Koech.
The Deputy Director for Mining Areman Elim, Turkana Artisanal Mining Committee Chair Eregae Micklam, and Turkana West Mining Officer Michael Ejikon were also present.
