The County Government and the Kenya Red Cross Society have scaled up their coordinated drought response by partnering with groups from Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, to deliver relief food to 1,000 families in Loima.
The distribution, accompanied by a medical outreach, was conducted at Loroo village in Turkwel Ward, Loima Sub-county.
Assistant Director for Disaster Risk Management Achilo Christopher said the food aid would support more than 6,000 people, based on an average household size of six.
“What we have received is food aid for 1,000 families. This will support up to 6,000 persons,” he said at the distribution site.
Achilo added that the relief was accompanied by an integrated health outreach to address medical needs in the area.
Turkana County Red Cross Coordinator Rukia Abubakar said the Kitale groups included maize millers, farmers’ associations and churches.
“As Kenya Red Cross, we have been working closely with the County Government to reach out to partners in the fight against the ongoing drought. We are convinced the food aid distributed will last the community for three weeks or more,” she said.
Deputy Director for Disaster Risk Management Moses Nawoton presided over the distribution alongside Loima Deputy Sub-county Administrator Justus Eloto.
