Turkana is set to benefit from a solar mini-grid project designed to generate between 180 and 290 units of electricity, following talks between the County Government and prospective implementer LIFT Community Best Organization.
The project, to be stationed at Kakuma, is expected to further expand access to clean and safe power to both host and refugee residing in the area once it kicks off in the coming month.
County Executive for Climate Change and Energy Dr. Anthony Apalia was briefed on the project plan and implementation model during a meeting with LIFT officials.
“One of the county’s key roles is to expand residents’ access to clean energy. As such, we are open to partnerships to achieve this goal,” Dr. Apalia said.
He commended the organization for tapping solar power, noting Turkana’s strong potential to harness sunlight for electricity and drive economic growth.
“We are equally keen to ensure that partners fully comply with partnership terms and adhere to legal requirements for operating as energy solution providers under Kenyan law,” he added.
Faustine Mwanue, team lead at LIFT Community Best Organization, expressed optimism about the project’s impact.
“We are optimistic the project will succeed and directly benefit the local population. We will adhere to all laid down procedures of operation,” Mwanue said.
The briefing was also attended by County Director for Energy Jackson Lojore, Deputy Director Geoffrey Eregae, and staff from the energy directorate.
