Residents of Turkana West Sub-County are set to benefit from improved transport and connectivity following the handover of three major road maintenance and upgrade projects aimed at enhancing accessibility, road safety, and economic growth across the region.

The projects include the 25-kilometre Kakuma–UNHCR–Pokotom–Letea Road, the 15-kilometre Lopurki Junction–Lodakach Road, and the 20-kilometre Nakoyo–Kare Road in Lopur Ward. Together, the projects represent an investment of over KSh 15 million through the County Government of Turkana and the Ward Development Fund.

The works will involve bush clearing, grading, site clearance, and road formation improvements to open up critical transport corridors linking Kakuma Municipality, refugee camp business centres, host communities, and remote villages.

Once completed, the roads are expected to improve access to markets, schools, health facilities, and government services while facilitating the movement of people and goods.

Speaking during the site handover exercises, county engineers and leaders emphasized the importance of community participation and collaboration between contractors and local residents to ensure timely and successful project delivery. They also called for immediate mobilization of equipment and adherence to quality standards throughout implementation.

The road projects are expected to strengthen connectivity, improve road safety, stimulate local trade, and unlock new social and economic opportunities across Turkana West Sub-County.
