Stakeholders Call for Climate Action as Turkana Celebrates World Environment Day

Turkana County today joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

The celebrations, held at the Lodwar Cathedral Catholic Church, brought together government officials, environmental stakeholders, development partners, and members of the public to reflect on the urgent need for collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

Speaking during the event, Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyanga emphasized that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of all sectors of society. He noted that climate change continues to pose a significant threat to livelihoods, natural resources, and ecosystems, and called on residents to actively participate in environmental conservation initiatives.

Nyanga further stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships among stakeholders and communities in advancing environmental conservation. He also commended environmental officers for their dedication and ongoing efforts to promote conservation initiatives across the County.

County Director of Environment, Phoebe Ekal urged residents to take an active role in protecting the environment, noting that a healthy environment is fundamental to sustainable livelihoods and the well-being of future generations. She encouraged communities to adopt environmentally responsible practices, including tree planting, proper waste management

The event was attended by Edward Wabwire, County Director for National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the MCA for Kanamkemer Ward James Ikeny, and other stakeholders, who echoed calls for increased tree cover, improved waste management systems, and stronger community involvement in environmental conservation efforts.

Observed under the global theme of “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”, this year’s World Environment Day served as a reminder of the urgent need for governments, institutions, communities, and individuals to work together in mitigating the effects of climate change and building a more sustainable future.

Also present were Turkana Central Sub-County Administrator Esther Kiyong’a, Huduma Centre Manager Willy Murgor, and KEFRI representative Collins Burundi, among other stakeholders committed to advancing environmental conservation in Turkana County.
