Civil servants drawn from across the county have today been sensitized on the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF), a comprehensive medical cover that complements the healthcare services provided under the Social Health Authority (SHA) by offering enhanced insurance benefits.
Opening the session, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Dominic Kinyanjui said a healthy population is the foundation of national development. He noted that Kenya’s development agendas, including Vision 2030, the Big Four Agenda and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), recognize healthcare as a key pillar of economic growth.
“For any nation to achieve sustainable development, the health of its people must remain a priority. It’s the reason the government continues to invest in health insurance schemes that promote a healthy, productive and resilient society,” said the DCC.
The POMSF package covers inpatient, outpatient and maternity services, as well as radiology, dental and optical care, renal dialysis, annual medical check-ups and chronic disease management. Benefit limits are determined by an employee’s job group.
Presenting the scheme, Simon N’gan’ga from SHA Headquarters said the cover extends to the principal member, one declared spouse and up to five children aged 21 years and below. Dependants pursuing full-time post-secondary education are covered up to 25 years, while there is no age limit for dependants living with disabilities.
County SHA Operations Manager Benjamin Namuya urged members to utilize Level II and Level III health facilities for common illnesses, noting that these facilities are accessible, cost-effective and accredited under SHA.
“Many common conditions can be effectively managed at Level II and III facilities. Utilizing these facilities helps improve efficiency while ensuring members receive quality care closer to their communities,” he said.
The sensitization brought together representatives from the State Department for Public Service, the Kenya Union of Public Servants, SHA officers from HQ and Turkana, and Huduma Centre.
