Lodwar, July 28, 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)
The County Government has secured public support for the proposed Lodwar Municipality Storm Water Drainage.
This was revealed during a public participation forum where officials disseminated findings of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) conducted to inform the project’s execution.
The project, to be implemented by Avatech as the consulting firm, seeks to improve storm water management, protect roads and riverbanks, and enhance the safety and cleanliness of the municipality by minimizing flood-related damage to businesses, homes, and public facilities.
Speaking during the forum Turkana Central Sub-County Administrator, Easter Kiyong’a urged residents to support the initiative, noting that although construction may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits would outweigh the disruptions.
“This project is intended to improve the lives of residents by reducing flooding and creating a safer urban environment. We ask the public to continue supporting development initiatives that will benefit future generations,” she said.
Deputy Municipal Manager Simon Nang’iro emphasized that public participation is a critical component of the Environmental Impact Assessment process, ensuring that community views are incorporated into project planning while promoting sustainable urban development.
“The views collected today will help shape the final project design and ensure it responds to the needs of the people.” Nang’iro said.
Representing Avatech Consultants Limited, Florence Muthui assured participants that the project would be implemented in compliance with national environmental laws and internationally recognized environmental and social safeguards.
Residents welcomed the project, expressing optimism that improved drainage infrastructure would reduce flooding, protect businesses and property, and improve mobility within the municipality. They also recommended continuous stakeholder engagement throughout implementation and called for high-quality construction to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
The recommendations were documented through structured questionnaires and stakeholder discussions and will inform the final Environmental Impact Assessment report before implementation begins.
Among those present were Avatech Consultants officials Allan Oundo, Julius Musili, Harriet Moraa, and John Etir, as well as Lodwar Municipality Social Protection Officer Richard Epae.
