Lodwar, July 31, 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

The County Government has conducted an inspection of the fleet of 12 ambulances operating in Turkana to check for compliance with national standards and gauge readiness for inclusion into the national system of ambulances in Kenya.

Seven of the inspected ambulances are owned by the County Government, the other four operate under Private owned health facilities while the last one was from a faith based health facility.

The exercise, was jointly conducted by the officials of the County and representatives of the Council of Governors, Social Health Authority (SHA) and, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).

According to the inspection lead, all ambulances that met the set standards would be onboarded to the national ambulance registration program for ease of deployment to offer services under the Social Health Insurance Fund and other emergencies.

The inspection verified compliance with key requirements, including vehicle roadworthiness, medical equipment, safety features, communication systems, staffing and regulatory documentation.

The exercise also identified areas requiring improvement under the intended framework.

The inspection follows the Ministry of Health’s six-month moratorium allowing counties to register public ambulances while meeting KMPDC standards. Once approved, the ambulances will be integrated into the national dispatch system to support timely referrals and quality emergency care.
