STAKEHOLDERS MEET OVER PLANNED FISH RESEARCH ON LAKE TURKANA

The County Chief Officer for Fisheries and Aquaculture Evans Lomodei yesterday chaired a fisheries stakeholders meeting over the planned Social-Economic Analysis Research in Lake Turkana by the Dutch Embassy.
The research, which will benefit Marsabit and Turkana Counties, seeks to assess opportunities in the fisheries-capture and aquaculture) sector.
The stakeholders included representatives from Kenya Fisheries Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kmfri, NEMA, and a consultant from the Dutch Embassy.
CCO Lomodei highlighted the steps undertaken by the Department in a bid to bolster the fisheries sector.
The plans include investment in the fresh fish value chain by providing cold chain facilities, demarcation of critical fish habitats in Kalokol, and control of illegal under-size fishing.
Ag. Director for Fisheries David Namwaya stressed the need for researchers to find out the reason for linear production despite heavy investments in the sector by the County to improve fishing efforts.
