Timothy Ekeno emerged victorious in the eleventh edition of the 10km Desert Wheelchair Race, which took place this morning as part of the ongoing Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival.

Ekeno completed the race in 22 minutes and 2 seconds, securing the top spot. William Ekai (30:00) and Simon Lochor (34:22) secured the second and third positions, respectively.

Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai, who officially flagged off the race, announced that the County Government will increase the prize money for future races. He also praised the competition for promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in the festival.

“I ask the Ministry of Education to support this talent and ensure that we allocate sufficient funds in our budget for prizes for those who excel,” he said.

He said race has played a significant role in fostering a sense of inclusion among persons with disabilities (PWDs) and has encouraged greater participation.

Prize money for the winners included Sh100,000 for the first-place finisher, Sh75,000 for the second-place finisher, and Sh50,000 for the third-place finisher. Additionally, all other participants received Sh20,000.

In a notable addition this year, the race featured a women’s category, attracting two competitors, Faith Akai, who completed the race in 39:22, and Namoni Lobe, who finished in 40:00.

Chief Officer for Education and Social Protection Etelej Korea emphasized that race was part of the county’s efforts to promote the involvement of PWDs in activities, emphasizing that ‘disability is not inability.’

Several senior County Government officials were present during the race, including Chief Officer for Sports and Vocational Training Robert Loyelei, Director of Social Protection Mark Amiyo, Deputy Director Hebrews Idoka, and Assistant Directors James Ekanyuku (Children Services) and Amos Ariong (Disability Services).

Turkana Central Sub-County Administrator Esther Kiyonga was also present.
