County Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Janerose Tioko, today officiated the handover of the Drought Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods Programme (DRSLP) supported farms in Loima and Turkana Central Sub-counties.

The farms include the 300-acre Koono surface and Kakemera micro-irrigation schemes.

Chief Tioko, who also distributed maize, sorghum, cowpeas, and assorted vegetable seeds to farmers at Koono Scheme said that the Department would station an agronomist in the Scheme to provide timely extension services including best practices on land preparations.

The County Government, CCO said had procured chemicals to combat the Fall Army Worm (FAW) and enough seeds in preparation for the short rains between the months of October and December.

The Koono surface irrigation scheme will benefit 420 farmer households while the Kakemera micro-project will be divided among 50 households. The micro-project has 27 shadenets.

DRSLP County Coordinator, Paul Njuguna, noted that already 60% of the Koono project is already under active crop production, while the Kakemera one was to be utilized for commercial vegetable production because of a ready market in Lodwar Municipality

Also present was Charles Ekeno (Turkana Central Irrigation Officer) and a host of staff based in Loima Sub-county.
