The County Government of Turkana, in collaboration with Development Partners, commenced the 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence.

The event was presided over by the Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyanga.

He was accompanied by Chief Officer for Gender and Youth Affairs, Joseph Epuu, and Mollen Onderi, the Director for Gender.

Under the theme “Unite; Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Children,” the occasion aimed at raising awareness and advocating for the prevention of gender-based violence.

The DCS said the collaborative effort with UNHCR, GIZ-Germany, and other partners greatly signifies the commitment to addressing this critical issue as one force.

He said the launch sets the stage for a collective and transformative effort that raises and strengthens voices that unite against GBV in Turkana.

“Despite the many challenges ahead of us, the momentum generated on this inaugural day, is a testament to the resilience and determination of County Government in eradicating gender-based violence,” stated DCS Nyang’a.

Chief Officer for Gender and Youth Affairs, Joseph Epuu emphasized the need for a united front against the vice, highlighting the government’s commitment to building a safer society.

“Education is identified as a key tool for prevention, with a call to invest in programs that raise awareness and understanding, empowering individuals to recognize and intervene against the abuse,” said Chief Epuu.

He appealed for intentional effort in dismantling the societal norms perpetuating GBV violence.

The stakeholders were urged to recognize the impact of their actions during and beyond the 16 Days of Activism, with unity as a beacon of hope and financial investment in the sector, as building blocks for a violence-free society.

Godfrey Okoth- senior protection officer at UNHCR, said UNHCR’s role in witnessing and addressing the impact of gender-based violence, aligns with the mission to protect the most vulnerable.

Pauline Lokuruka, representing Echami Aito, emphasized the crucial role of education as a transformative force to address various challenges faced by the community.

The stakeholders were challenged to unite in advocating for inclusive and quality education for all.
