Turkana Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus hosted a delegation from Peace Winds Japan, a UNHCR Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) implementing partner, and held discussions on projects by the organization in Turkana.
Led by the organization’s Country Director, Achiba Kiko, Peace Winds Japan briefed the Deputy Governor on their programs and interventions in the Water, Health, Environment, and Solid waste management sectors for the refugee and host communities in Turkana.
“Our interventions have contributed towards reducing Open Free Defecation, improved access to water, and enhanced the capacity of communities to participate in sanitation improvement,” said Achiba Kiko.
Citing Turkana South, Turkana North, and Turkana West as the main areas of their operations, Achiba Kiko informed the Deputy Governor of the plans to support the three-year solid waste management strategic plan for Kakuma Municipality proposed by the County Departments for Lands and Environment.
Deputy Governor Dr. Erus expressed gratitude for the interventions, emphasizing that the County had made significant progress through assistance availed by the organization.
The DG said that partnership development was a key agenda of the County’s administration and pledged to offer the support required to facilitate continuity of collaboration between the County and Peace Winds Japan.
The DG further emphasized the need for regular briefs from partner organizations for continuous monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
On solid waste management in Kakuma Municipality, DG Erus lauded the progress made and consultation conducted with the County Departments as the best way forward.
He noted that the plan to equip the Municipality area with 250 bins, garbage collection trucks, and waste transfer sites was a move in the right direction for the Municipal residents.
The PWJ team also had Evelyn S. Tumaina (WASH coordinator) and Emmanuel Luyali (Area Manager). They were accompanied by the Turkana West Environment officer Ekaran Victorsam.
