The Kenya National Library Service (KNLS) is in discussions with the County Government of Turkana to build a state-of-the-art library in Lodwar town, designed to cater to the reading needs of the Turkana community.

During a meeting with County Government officials, Philomena Mwirigi from KNLS highlighted the proposed facility’s features, including the introduction of mobile services, known as the “Library on Wheels.”

The proposed facility will draw inspiration from successful KNLS models in Buruburu, Nakuru, and Eldama Ravine.

Mrs. Mwirigi emphasized the importance of security measures, fire disaster response readiness, and the safeguarding of reading materials.

She asked the County officials to embark on benchmarking visits to various KNLS libraries across the country.

“Benchmarking visits will provide you with comprehensive insights into library management, service and product offerings, and station operations,” Mwirigi asserted.

Chief Officer for Education and Social Protection, expressed enthusiasm for the project and said that it aligned with Governor Lomorukai’s fifth agenda on revitalisation of education.

The Chief Officer explained that the facility would be an important flagship project owing to its potential to improve the educational outcomes of library users and boost literacy levels.

Chief Officer Korea stressed the importance of integrating Turkana lifestyle, culture, history, literature, and philosophy into the library’s reading volumes.

Additionally, Chief Officer Korea proposed the incorporation of traditional architecture in the design to create a unique and culturally resonant space.

To proceed with the project, KNLS is awaiting the County’s provision of suitable land.

Once established, Lodwar will join the ranks of major towns, such as Kakamega, Eldoret, Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii, and Mombasa, where KNLS services are readily accessible.

Presently, the entire county relies on a single public library located at the Kenyatta line in Lodwar.

The initiative promises to fill a crucial gap in providing comprehensive library services to the people of Turkana.
